It's part of an ongoing initiative by Dubbo Regional Council to close little-used walkways to make residential areas safer.

The walkways proposed to be closed in east Dubbo are: Lancaster Park Place to Carisbrook Park, Twickenham Drive to Chrisbrook Park and Erica Close to St Georges Terrace.

Council is also looking at closing six in west Dubbo: Gumtree Avenue to Horizon Place, Horizon Place to Meadowbank Drive, Medowbank Drive to Springfield Way, MacKay Drive to the public reserve behind Yawarra Community School, Meurer Court to the public reserve and RivedUBBOrgum place to the public reserve.

Before a decision is made on the closure of the walkways, council is seeking feedback from the public, especially from people who live in the areas or use the laneways.

Each walkway will be judged on a case-by-case basis. If the feedback indicates it should be closed, the land will be offered for sale to the neighbours at market value, or if that's not permitted because of the zoning, a fence will be constructed to block it off.

"Council has been receiving complaints from residents of anti-social and other alleged criminal behaviour in these walkways," council's manager infrastructure delivery Matthew Lewis said.

Dubbo mayor Ben Shields said the walkways were a "design mistake" from 20 to 30 years ago.

"Council is absolutely committed to closing down walkways or laneways when residents tell us they avoid using them for fear of their safety," he said.

"They're no more than a few metres wide but very long and all it does is give way for an anti-social element."

Residents are invited to share their feedback on the closures until February 28.
