Dubbo Regional Council has confirmed the second stage of the Boundary Road extension project will begin in February.
Construction is expected to be completed in December.
The first stage of the $8 million Boundary Road project, between Wheelers Lane and Alexandrina Avenue, was completed by council in late 2018.
The project received $4 million in funding from the NSW government and Alkane Resources is contributing $2.3 million under a voluntary planning agreement with council.
Preliminary works for stage two have started with rock excavation and the delivery of pre-cast stormwater pipes.
The 1.2 kilometre two-lane sealed and fully kerbed extension will connect Boundary Road from Alexandrina Avenue through to Sheraton Road.
Stage two constructions will include integrated bike lanes, installation of street lighting and underground electricity, telecommunications, sewer and stormwater infrastructure and a footpath on the southern side.
Dubbo Regional mayor Ben Shields said the works linking Boundary Road between Alexandrina Avenue and Sheraton Road would improve access for residents in the city's growth areas.
"The Keswick Estate and South Lake areas of Dubbo are growing as new housing estates are built and more people make Dubbo their home," Cr Shields said.
It will also help ease congestion at the roundabout on Wheelers Lane and Mitchell Highway.
Council CEO Michael McMahon said expanding the road network was part of council's ongoing investment in capital projects.
"The project will drive confidence in the future of the Dubbo Region," Mr McMahon said.
"Council has allocated more than $31.8 million for urban roads capital works over the next four years with $15 million being spent in 2019-20."
