At around 10.45 pm on Friday night, emergency services were called to the intersection of Armstrong Crescent and Columbia Drive in Dubbo following reports a girl was unconscious on the side of the road.
According to a spokesperson from the Orana Mid-Western Police District, at about 10.30 pm, a group of seven teenage girls called a taxi to Talbragar Street to drive them to Armstrong Crescent.
Upon arriving at the destination, the taxi "stopped momentarily and drove off again when the driver noticed the girls exiting the vehicle prior to paying," police said in a statement.
Police said it is believed five of the seven passengers exited the vehicle while it was still moving.
Police said the taxi driver, a 49-year-old man, stopped soon after the incident and the other two passengers remaining inside the vehicle exited after they paid the driver.
The taxi then left the scene.
NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived at around 10.45 pm where a 15-year-old girl was treated at the scene before being taken to Dubbo Hospital.
The 15-year-old was then airlifted to Sydney Children's Westmead Hospital and remains in a serious but stable condition.
A family member of the 15-year-old has confirmed she has since undergone two surgeries after a brain scan revealed a blood clot.
Two of five of the girls to exit the vehicle while it was moving also sustained minor cuts and abrasions to their legs and arms.
Police have started an investigation into Friday night's incident.
