A 23-year-old man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Wellington.

About 9.50am on January 24, officers attached to Western Region Domestic Violence High Risk Offenders team were patrolling the Wellington CBD, when they approached a man wanted on an outstanding warrant on Railway Avenue.
As officers spoke to the man, he attempted to flee towards Maxwell Street and allegedly deliberately ran into an officer, causing him to fall backwards.
The officer hit his head on the ground causing him to lose consciousness momentarily.

Following a brief struggle with other officers, the 23-year-old man was arrested and taken to Wellington Police Station where an outstanding warrant was executed.
He was also charged with assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, resist officer in execution of duty, possess prohibited drug and three counts of goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen.
The man appeared at Wellington Local Court on January 23, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Dubbo Local Court on January 29.
The officer remains off duty and is receiving medical treatment.
