A Victorian cafe is handing out on-the-spot fines to people who use take-away coffee cups on the premises.
Grassroots Deli Cafe owner Maria Gordon, of Port Campbell, said it was frustrating to find people ordering their coffee in a take-away cup but still consuming them at the store.
"It's like, really? Why don't you just use a cup," she said.
"We really try and reduce our waste at the store so we've started fining people $1 and donating it to Sea Shepherd."
Ms Gordon said about 20 people had been fined in the three months since the initiative was started by staff member Jacquie James.
"It's really just a conversation starter about what we can do to combat our war on waste," she said.
"If everyone just does a little bit, the transformation could be amazing."
Ms Gordon said staff chose to donate the money to Sea Shepherd as a way to say thanks for their "amazing" conservation work.
"We have to make sure we're supporting people who are looking after our ecosystem," she said.
