On January, 14, at about 10.50am, emergency services responded to reports a 60-year-old man had been shot at a rural property on the Catombal Road at Eurimbla, 50 kilometres south of Wellington.
A person inside the home rang emergency services and is currently assisting with police inquiries.
Local detectives and the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad have established Strike Force Kerrison to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
A crime scene was established, which is being examined by specialist forensic officers. According to police the deceased had lived in the area for "quite some time."

Detective Inspector crime manager Denise Godden addressed the media on Wednesday and said the death was a rare situation and she didn't think the community should be worried.
She couldn't confirm whether or not the man was known to police, or if there was any links to motorbike gang activity in the area, saying it was a line of inquiry police were still undertaking.
At this stage, police have no witnesses and are appealing to the public.

Det Insp Godden said police were appealing to vehicles with dash-cam who may have recently used that road to come forward with any vision they may have.
"A lot of trucks use that road.... and that we can have access to anyone's dash-cam if they're willing to hand it in," she said.
Police will not be releasing any further information about the deceased until his family are notified.
Any witnesses or anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Dubbo Police Station on 6883 1599.
