When the case returns to court almost five years will have passed since the 20-month-old foster child died at a Neilrex property near Coolah in March 2015.
Police arrested and charged the 43-year-old woman with murder in January 2018 and she has been remanded in custody ever since.
In Dubbo Local Court on Thursday, Magistrate Gary Wilson adjourned the case to February 13 because a pathologist in Canada has not yet analysed digital versions of microscopic slides of tissue from the dead toddler's body.
The court heard logistical difficulties had meant the slides were only sent just before Christmas.
"Obviously it can't continue to drag on," magistrate Wilson said.
The woman's defence team wanted the slides analysed because other experts in Australia offered differing views about the cause of the boy's death.
