Six tonnes of prawns and about 2000 dozen oysters had so far gone home with DMC Meat and Seafood customers this December, owner Mark Knaggs reported on Monday.

Ham also continued in popularity but the surprise item making it on to festive menus was turkey.

"This year a lot of turkey... hams have been large, but we've sold probably twice as much turkey as we normally do," Mr Knaggs said.

"Probably about two tonne of turkey this year, which is really strange, it caught us off guard so it's lucky we can get plenty of turkey."

While the store does boned and rolled turkey, this year it had been whole turkeys enjoying strong demand.

"I don't know why, whether there was a recipe for really good turkey the other day," Mr Knaggs said.

In the final countdown to Christmas, Mr Knaggs assured shoppers "we've got plenty".

"We've still got heaps of prawns, heaps of oysters, heaps of fish, enough hams," he said.

There was also plenty of chicken, but last-minute shoppers might miss out if they were hoping for turkey.

"So that's probably the only thing I can say at the moment we're going to run out of, is turkey," Mr Knaggs said.

The DMC Meat and Seafood staff of 35 expands to 50 for Christmas.

As customers beat a path through the doors, Mr Knaggs said they seemed to be in party mode.

"Every time Christmas falls in the middle of the week, it seems to develop like that," he said.

"Everyone takes a couple of days off before, a couple days off after and they celebrate."
