Robert Collins repeatedly sent menacing text messages to the woman's phone on November 3, a police facts statement presented in court revealed.
The 38-year-old had been in an off-again on-again relationship with the woman since 2017 but the relationship ended in April 2019.
Police said Collins was heavily affected by alcohol when he abused the woman via text message.
"My tough Goulburn Dubbo friends will fu**in destroy you," Collins wrote in one of the messages he sent alongside a smiley face emoji.
"You're not family to me but if you want to test me I'll fu***ng kill you," he vowed in another message.
"Lastly what you think passes for okay is Dubbo. Dubbo is the worst place in the state, but I'm happy for you to think your [sic] good," Collins advised.
"Go live with someone who lives in Wellington and leave us to move on," he told the woman.
"I'm also cutting what I'm giving you," Collins threatened.
The woman reported Collins to police and while officers met with her, they said Collins tried to call her seven times.
In Dubbo Local Court last week, Collins pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service to threaten to kill.
He also pleaded guilty to one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.
According to Collins' legal representative, the offender was remorseful and had reduced his alcohol intake since he bombarded the woman with abusive text messages.
Magistrate Wilson said Collins received a "very good" pre-sentence report from Community Corrections, in which the offender acknowledged his behaviour and problematic relationship with alcohol.
"You've been subject to intensive corrections orders (ICOs) before," magistrate Wilson reminded Collins in court.
Collins was convicted and sentenced to a nine month term of imprisonment, which he must serve in the community in the form of an ICO under supervision from Community Corrections.
He was also slapped with an alcohol and drugs ban and ordered to comply with any treatment regimes he is directed to engage in.
