But in a turnaround sparked by a Buy from the Bush post, Young Creative Farms' orders have tripled in the past month and a new opportunity has opened up.
On Thursday the home-based business started by Angus and Ruth Young will display its handmade farm boards to shoppers in the heart of Sydney.
Young Creative Farms is "excited" to be one of 20 rural businesses that will exhibit at a one-day pop-up market in Martin Place, organised by Buy from the Bush.
The social media movement launched by Grace Brennan to showcase stores and makers from drought-hit areas, Buy from the Bush has more than 150,000 followers on Facebook.
Mr Young said it had been a boon to their business, which usually has preschools and day care centres as its largest market.
"We were having a factory shutdown about four weeks ago, because we only had eight orders for Christmas, and since this campaign's been happening, we've tripled that," he said.
"We went from having eight Christmas orders to receiving 24... great for us."
The pop-up market will give Sydneysiders the chance to meet bush makers, browse their wares and have a yarn face-to-face with some of the businesses they've been connecting with online.
Mrs Brennan, a farmer's wife, said the support for Buy from the Bush from across Australia, particularly the city had been overwhelming.
"Having grown up in Sydney, I was really aware of how much people in the city want to show their support if given a chance," Mrs Brennan said.
"It gives city people a simple way to help rural people in need and people are enjoying exploring the beautiful things on offer in the bush. Martin Place is about as far as you can get from the dusty paddocks of these businesses' back yards so it's an exciting idea.
"We've received incredible assistance from major Sydney businesses like GPJ [George P. Johnson] and Harry the Hirer to bring this event to life."
The Buy from the Bush pop-up market will be held from 8am to 8pm or until sold out.
