Q: Your recent songs, 'Healing Hands' and 'Come Clean', portray quite personal stories. Can you tell us what inspired them?
A: Come Clean, and Healing Hands both came from a similar place. I was drinking and partying way more than I should have been. I was starting to see the good things in my life slip away, so I decided to stop drinking. I want to be honest with my lyrics. I want to inspire change in people.
Q: In several interviews, you've talked about going through some tough times and being involved with people who probably weren't the best people to be around. Why do you think you reached such a low point?
A: I cut a lot of people out of my life, I guess I kind of went into self-sabotage. I think I was close to having what I always dreamed of, and maybe it scared me, I still struggle with these things. It's not something that goes away.
Q: Why do you think Healing Hands has been such a huge success?
A: I think Healing Hands is an anthem; it's a feel-good song with an inspirational message.
Q: How do you feel about bringing your tour to Dubbo?
A: I feel great about it. I'm excited to see the city and to meet the locals. I've played in the major cities so many times, I've always wanted to get into regional Australia, so I'm so excited that it's finally happening.
Q: In a lot of interviews, you have spoken about your sister, Grace, Are you two close?
A: We are very close, we live together in LA, she inspires me to better.
Q: Where did your love for music originate?
A: I think it was the love of performing and growing up listening to Motown..those songs are just full of love.
Q: If you could offer advice to anyone who may be going through similar struggles, what would that be?
A: Don't give up, talk to people and just keep trying to be the best version of yourself.
Q: Do you have any monumental moments or highlights from your career you can share with us?
A: Coachella was a huge show for me. All of the industry is there watching, and when I was growing up, I dreamed of playing at that festival.
Q: Previously you've said; "the older I get, the shyer I become and the more I overthink," what prompted that?
A: I guess life gets harder, and things become more complicated.
Sewell plays the The Garden Hotel on January 25.
