Five Star Girl scored a comfortable win in the Racingtrophies.com.au Benchmark 58 Handicap (1600m), skipping clear around the bend and going on to make it two wins in the past four starts for Dubbo trainer Kody Nestor.

While her recent form has been strong it hasn't all been smooth sailing, as Five Star Gal has found trouble at times and been made to work for those consistent results.

Monday marked Kate Cowan's sixth successive ride on Five Star Gal, and Nestor was delighted to see his apprentice take control early and get the job done.

"Kate did the right thing. She bounced right to the front, dictated, and got a couple of soft sectionals, and then kicked again off the corner," Nestor told Sky Thouroughbred Central.

"The little mare has been racing consistent so she deserved it and Kate deserved it.

"She [Five Star Gal] has been doing well but she's the kind of mare who needs things to go her way in the run and I thought she [Cowan] summed things up well coming to the first corner.

"The race was in her control, she dictated, and she got away with the win."

As the winning trainer said, Cowan got to the front early after getting away best from gate six.

The Flying Scot ($12) and Rockchesta ($6) put pressure on the leader but Cowan wasn't fazed and set the pace before booting clear around the turn for home.

She went on to win by two lengths while Sugar Lane ($4.20) edged out Naoko ($7.50) in a tight battle for second.

Five Star Gal's record now reads three wins from 17 career starts but two of those wins have come since she arrived at Nestor's stables midway through the year.
