Between 11.30pm and midnight on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports of a grass fire in a paddock alongside John Glenn Place in Dubbo.

Officers attached to Orana Mid Western Police District canvassed the area and commenced inquiries into the matter.

Then at 3am on Wednesday, firefighters responded to reports of a grass fire near the Erskine Street bridge.

On arrival emergency services located two separate fires five metres apart and they had spread into surrounding trees and grass.

Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Dubbo Station Officer John Poulos said under the right conditions these fires could have been dangerous to nearby people and homes.

"If that wind had of came up like it has been it could have definitely blown an ember out," he said.

FRNSW Station Officer Chris Cusack urged the community to contact police if they saw anyone acting suspicious.

Crime Manager Detective Chief Inspector Denise Godden said these offences were taken very seriously by police.

"It's a public safety issue and endangers the lives of community members, for both those with houses in close vicinity to the fires and firefighters themselves," she said.

"These type of acts are extremely dangerous, endangering lives and putting people's homes and properties at risk.

"We encourage the public to ring triple-0 and report anyone they see acting suspiciously."

Penalties relating to deliberately lit fires can include fines and/or jail time.
