Henry Railz passed 50 for ACT/NSW Country but it wasn't enough as the defending champions went down to Victoria Metro in Monday's opening round of the Cricket Australia Under 19 National Championships.
Railz's campaign for a spot in the Australian under 19 side for next year's World Cup began well, as his half century kept his side in the game but it proved not enough as ACT/NSW Country suffered a 36-run loss in the opening round in Perth.
Victoria Metro made 7/241 batting first, with Dubbo's Brock Larance claiming 1/12 with the ball for ACT/NSW Country.
Larance (13) and Railz (57), batting at three and four respectively, batted together for only a few minutes before Larance was caught and bowled.
Railz hit five fours and two sixes and looked in control but wickets fell around him eventually he was bowled with 78 runs still needed from victory.
Some late order hitting from tail saw ACT/NSW Country claw their way to 205 but it wasn't enough.
The Victoria Metro side featured Jake Fraser-McGurk, a player who has already made Sheffield Shield half centuries.
Former RSL Colts spearhead Tom Atlee did not play the match but is expected to play on Tuesday against Victoria Country.
That game begins at 1pm AEDT.
