The bottle trees are part of a private donation by a local resident that will see five bottle trees in total transferred to two different areas at the Zoo.
Three of the trees are being transplanted at The Waterhole precinct whilst two additional trees will be moved next year to be added to the new Gateway to Africa (African Wild Dog exhibit) that commenced construction last week.
"We are very grateful for the donation of these beautiful established bottle trees," said Kath Oke, Taronga Western Plains Zoo's Asset Manager.
"The three trees being transferred this week will take pride of place alongside the donated palm trees at the new Waterhole precinct that is currently under construction."
"The process to transfer the trees is a big one with a lot of planning taking place before the actual day of the move.
Our contractors have teams at both ends along with cranes and trucks to ensure the trees are removed and then transplanted in a timely fashion," said Kath.
In preparation for the move the trees were pruned and all of the branches and clippings were fed out to the browsing animal species at the Zoo, such as the Black Rhinos.
These bottle trees are estimated to be approximately 50-60 years old.
"Bottle trees are such an iconic tree species and it is exciting to think these trees will now live out many more years to come at an iconic place like Taronga Western Plains Zoo, rather than being cut down," said Kath.
These bottle trees, as well as the date palms donated by Bracken House and transferred earlier this month, will be a key feature of The Waterhole precinct.
