But he's still making an impact where he can.
Bower and fellow former Souths regular Mat Finlay have only made one appearance so far this season, in the McDonald's Megahit Twenty20 competition.
The Hornets are again in action on Friday night, taking on Rugby in the first game of the third round and while Bower is unavailable for that one he is enjoying the chance to still be a part of Souths.
"I enjoy the Friday night stuff," Bower said.
"Obviously not playing Saturdays gives me some freedom but I still have work and a young family."
Bower made 31 in the Hornets' last game, a seven-wicket loss to RSL-Colts, while Finlay made 33 that night.
The Hornets head into Friday night's game without a win in the first two rounds, while Rugby has one win.
Despite the slow start to the T20 season, the Hornets have shown real improvement in the longer form of the game and have two RSL-Whitney Cup wins to their name.

Bower, the former first grade captain, has been impressed by what's seen from last season's wooden-spooners and new captain Adam Wells.
"He is doing a great job at the moment, he is scoring runs and winning games of cricket," Bower said.
The Hornets have used the Megahit to give young players such as Ryan Boland, Joe Crampton, and Ram Haridharan a taste of higher grade cricket. Boland and Haridharan have continued to perform and both teens were a part of the Dubbo side which defeated Wellington last Sunday in round two of the Western Zone Plate.
Rugby will again be looking to captain and recent Western Zone representative Jacob Hill to lead the way.
Hill has starred across all forms of the game so far this season, while support on Friday night will come from the in-form youngsters Ben Wheeler and Koda Sissian.
Rugby is another which has fielded a younger side in the Megahit this season but the lineup does still possess the experience of Nathan Munro and Zac Murphy.
Former RSL-Colts spinner Jakke Gardiner has also performed well so far for Rugby and will be required to bowl important overs against the Hornets' middle order.
Play starts 6.30pm.
