Dubbo man David Horan is the Australian Kiteflyers Society president and every second Sunday of the month he gathers with fellow flyers at Jubilee Oval for a monthly outing.
"I've been flying kites for the last 50 odd years and I do have the scars to prove it," he says.
"When I was quite young I was dealing with a large box kite.
"I was with my dad and uncle and they handed me the line and told me to hang on tight."
Mr Horan did what he was told, hung on, went over two fences and lived to tell this tale.
His passion for kite flying was clearly not lost and now he is helping families like the Wadhwa's discover the enjoyment the hobby can bring.

After moving to Dubbo from Melbourne, Manisha Wadhwa said her family found out about the kite flying meet-up on Facebook.
"I thought I should take my son because he has never experienced kites," she said.
"He was very happy, he was asking me when he could fly the kites again.
"We are definitely planning to go again."
Mrs Wadhwa, who moved to Australia from India four years ago to study her masters in accounting, said she recently relocated to Dubbo and social activities like the kite flying meet-up left her with a good impression of the city.
"I was in Melbourne for four years and it was part of my visa requirements to work and live in a regional area," she said.
A constant flow of people like the Wadhwa's took part in the last Australian Kiteflyers Association outing on November 10, Mr Horan said.
"We have several kites available for kids to fly," he advised.
"If anybody wants to buy one we have them available at cost...they're reliable flyers, the kids love them.
"If any adults are interested in learning how to make their own kites, we'll also help them."
The next kite flying outing will be held on December 8 from 10am to 2pm at Jubilee Oval.
