The owner wanted a simple win to get the three-year-old up-and-running but trainer Clint Lundholm opted to send him around on Saturday and it worked out a treat.
Conspirator scored a simple win in the day's first event, the Rhino Lodge Maiden Handicap (1000m), with a strong crowd on hand to see the local hope deliver.
"They're the days you want to shine and have a couple of winners," Lundholm said of the ever-popular Derby Day, before speaking about his victor.
"We were really looking at Melbourne Cup day, the owner just wanted an easy kill for him but once the noms came out for this it looked a good race to place him in and I was comfortable with starting him.
"He trialled really well and he's a very causal horse in his track-work. You don't get much of a guide on him but you take a little form out of that trial and he came on a bit so we were quietly confident."
Conspirator ran first in his one trial earlier this month and he carried that form into his debut race, overcoming a slow start to win by a comfortable three-and-a-half lengths.
