The towns will receive a minimum of $100,000 to support the makeover over a five-year period as part of Rural Aid's inaugural Ten Town Makeover project.

The win includes $10,000 for town leaders to workshop with experts to develop a long-term renewal strategy.

And $90,000 will be spent on materials for maintenance projects identified by the town leaders, with the aim of available materials being sourced locally to support local businesses.

Rural Aid's Farm Army of volunteers will spend a week in the town in the first year bringing a welcome financial injection to the local businesses.

Support over the remaining years will be determined by the town leaders once plans for the makeover have been developed.

Walgett's North West Plains Sustainability Group (NWPSG) was approached by the Walgett CWA after becoming aware of the makeover initiative through rural resilience officer Amanda Glasson.

Denielle Kilby who works for the NWPSG said the CWA had really good ideas about what could be done in Walgett to help boost the town's image.

"And give people great experiences in Walgett, so that the story about our town, our people, history and culture was improved," Ms Kilby explained.

"With the overall aim improving our local businesses, encouraging new business and looking after our natural resources."

Ms Kilby said she "could not stop smiling" after hearing they'd won the makeover, which will commence in October 2020.

"We're really proud of our town and where we come from. We want to see it continue to be great into the future and we see this as a good kick-start to that," she added.

Together with the money and volunteers Ms Kilby hopes the makeover can be used together with what the town already has in it's people and resources to do "some real good" for Walgett for generations to come.

The Walgett region has been drought affected for many years, and Ms Kilby said the ongoing dry has been relenteless.

"The people are from here and want to be here and we'll make it work. And we'll be here when it's over," she said.

"It is tough and... I guess moral does drop but it comes and goes. But this (makeover project) is a great boost, it is just such a positive thing.

'The roll-out over five years gives us something to look forward to.... and that's been hard in the past, it's just been relentlessly dry...."

Ms Kilby was also pleased to see that Walgett's neighbouring town, Brewarrina, was successful in receiving the makeover.

"We're excited. It's a great opportunity," she said, adding that the project's time-frame was perfect because it gave the community something to look forward to," she said.

Ms Kilby said even just having the volunteers in town for a week at a time over the five year period will help provide a much needed boost to Walgett's local economy.

"It will be enormous for our local businesses because they will be shopping in town," she explained.

"We're just so lucky and our neighbouring towns will benefit from that too, with these volunteers travelling through."

Heather Finlayson from Brewarrina said initially she was in total disbelief at being successful and it took a while to register

"I was unable to sleep that night with positive thoughts running through my mind, thinking of ideas and opportunities to benefit the community," she said.

"This will bringing leaders and the community together to complete some fantastic projects that will be evident to visitors and ex residents."

Ms Finlayson said the makeover to Brewarrina will help achieve great things, despite the recent terrible times which have led to a decline in the population, and loss of services that other communities take for granted.

"I can see this opportunity rewarding the community members who are sticking it out and have chosen to continue to call Bre home," she added.

Sally Edwards said she was thrilled to hear that Coolah had been selected.

"It will be a great boost for our community, after what has been a real tough few years since the Sir Ivan Fire," Ms Edwards explained.

"I really hope that the Ten Towns Initiative will help Coolah achieve some of its projects previously planned by the community and also identify some exciting new projects that will benefit the Coolah community."

Rural Aid CEO, Charles Alder said while everyone's focus is largely on the impact the drought is having on impact farmers and their families, equal attention should be given to rural communities.

"Small country towns play a critical role in supporting the social and economic fabric of their local communities," Mr Adler explained.

"This initiative will lift morale and inject much needed capital into the local community

Ms Alder said small towns have a unique symbiotic relationship with the farms located around them.

Farmers rely on their local town for off farm income through employment, farm employees and services from the local doctor, teachers, dentists, accountants and government support staff," he said.

"Then there's the small businesses like the local pharmacy, grocery, butcher, bakery, bank and rural supply company. Take these towns out of the equation and the local ecosystem is impacted forever.

Mr Alder said the charity organisation received over 60 applications and every one of the unsuccessful towns would be supported by Rural Aid in the future.
