NSW DPI Group Director, Recreational and Aboriginal Fisheries, Pete Turnell, said Gone Fishing Day offers the community a great excuse to get outdoors to celebrate our love of fishing in NSW.
"It really doesn't matter if you haven't fished before or if you're the keenest of anglers, Gone Fishing Day is for everyone, and it's great to see communities brought together to enjoy one of our most popular recreational activities," Mr Turnell said.
"Experienced fishers could browse the many stalls from local fishing clubs and groups, get tips from local experts, and introduce their kids to the sport by helping them get involved in the casting competitions and kids clinics. "Newcomers to fishing can similarly get involved and enjoy fish touch tanks, free goodie bags and the wide range of activities on offer.
Free NSW DPI community Gone Fishing Day events for everyone in the community were run in six locations across NSW on Sunday, with a great turn out showcasing Australia's love of recreational fishing.
"Forty-eight community fishing clubs across the state ran their own Gone Fishing Day events, thanks to the support of grants from the Recreational Fishing Trusts," Mr Turnell said.
"All Gone Fishing Day activities are free, and fishing and casting sessions were run throughout the day - with no need to register for the event, and no fishing licence will be required on the day."
Gone Fishing Day is supported with funds from the recreational Fishing Trusts and NSW DPI.
