REX's general manager of network strategy and sales Warrick Lodge says the airline has followed through on threats and withdrawn services to regional airports in the past due to the "myopic approach of some local councils".
"REX makes no apologies for doing what is necessary to ensure the continued provision of the essential regional air services that it provides," he said.
"Our airline has successfully introduced the Community Fare scheme in 39 regional communities in partnership with local councils, with the most recent being in Armidale. In the vast majority of cases, the local councils have proactively sought to reach an agreement with REX due to significant benefits of the scheme.
"Dubbo Regional Council has unilaterally increased airport head tax charges by more than $600K per year, in addition to increasing security screening charges. The only other choice for REX is to redeploy its resources to a different community that is willing to work with us in a spirit of partnership."
Dubbo regional councillor John Ryan has told the Daily Liberal it would be "irresponsible" of the council to "bow down to every company which wants to cut its costs by getting ratepayers to subsidise their commercial operations."
Mr Lodge believes Cr Ryan is misleading the ratepayers of Dubbo. The general manager said REX had not requested anything that would require ratepayers to subsidise the airport.
"We requested that airport charges do not increase by more than CPI and that REX is not charged for security screening due to our aircraft not legally requiring security screening under the relevant federal government regulations," Mr Lodge said.
"Aircraft that legally require security screening should be responsible for the cost of security screening, and this would have no impact on ratepayers."
Cr Ryan said the ongoing issues between REX and the council were complex and a face-to-face meeting would be the best way forward.
"I'll let the people be the judge of who's got a hidden agenda here, I felt it was important to respond to REX's earlier remarks because they were getting a clear run misrepresenting the truth in so many ways," he said. "Having said that, I don't wish to get into a slanging match. I'll make no further comment on the issue until we've had the opportunity to sit down and discuss this issue like adults, that's what the community expects of us."
