The blaze at a Macquarie Street residence was first reported at about 2pm.
"When we arrived we were confronted with a shed totally engulfed in fire and a number of homes in danger of being impacted if the fire spread," Dubbo Fire Station commander Chris Cusack told the Daily Liberal.
The road was closed for a short time to protect firefighters who were working on the road, Mr Cusack said.
He said the fire was fortunately able to be contained, but the shed and its contents were totally destroyed.
Nobody was injured in the fire.
No other homes were impacted and there were no suspicious circumstances.
"This is a timely reminder that people should have working smoke alarms and a fire evacuation in place," Mr Cusack said.
He said local residents can now contact Dubbo Fire Station and request a safety visit from firefighters.
"A safety visit assists people to reduce their risk of an accidental fire in the home and to safely escape in the event of a fire occurring," he said.
The visits involve firefighters checking to see if smoke alarms are working, installing one if required and replacing existing smoke alarm batteries at no cost.
Residents can also show firefighters around their property and get advice about cooking fire safety, heaters and open fires, barbecues and LPG cylinders and other hazards.
