People from along the Coast from Stanley through to east to Launceston are reporting on social media a meteorite or comet in the sky about 8.30pm.
Sergeant Rebecca Sulman, from the Tasmania Police radio room, said they had received a significant number of calls about the sighting.
"From what police have been able to find out, it seems to have been a meteorite," Sergeant Sulman said.
"We have had no reports of any injuries or damage."
Sergeant Sulman said police had contacted all airports, the Bureau of Meteorology and the astronomical society to find out any more information, but were yet to confirm any more.
Ulverstone's Jenny Ashton saw the meteorite while travelling near Hagley.
She captured it on dashcam and has shared it via social media.
