Seven millimetres (mm) of rain fell at Dubbo City Regional Airport in the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday with a further 0.6mm recorded by 3pm.
"Won't break the drought but exciting to see," said one optimistic resident.
It was the city's first rain event for September 2019 but there may be more to come.

Weatherzone is forecasting "mostly sunny days" on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
But there is an 80 per cent chance of of up to 10mm falling on Saturday and a 90 per cent chance of the same on Sunday.
Weatherzone reports that average rainfall in Dubbo to September is 446.2mm.
2019 rainfall as of mid-afternoon on Tuesday was 183.6mm, up from 118mm for the same period last year
The wettest day has been January 21 when 39.4mm was recorded.
