The Garage Sale Trail will be held on October 19 and 20. Residents are encouraged to put their second hand items for sale to reduce waste, the number of new products made, and the impact more and more "stuff" is having on the planet.
The weekend, which is expected to be held in about 140 council areas across Australia, is all about promoting sustainability.

Dubbo Regional mayor Ben Shields said the Garage Sale Trail was a way for neighbours and the broader community to meet, while also decluttering and raising money for either yourself or charity.
"We're really pleased to be involved in this grassroots national event as reducing waste and bringing community together are priorities for both council and residents," Cr Shields said.
At the end of the day we need to learn as a society to take responsibility for the waste we create.

It's also a fun way for council to encourage residents to reuse and help educate the community about the impact they can have when buying second hand.
"At the end of the day we need to learn as a society to take responsibility for the waste we create," Cr Shields said.
Last year, the household garage sales made an average of $309 and more than 500 kilograms of items were sold and redistrubuted at each garage sale.
Garage Trail Sale co-founder Andrew Valder said the sellers who had a bit of fun with their garage sale names were the ones who sold the most.
"Garage sale names like Sale of the Century, the Almost-Deceased Estate Sale, It's a Divorce and the Crap and Crepes Sale stick in our minds," Mr Valder said.
"At the Crap and Crepes Sale, four students from France gave away a crepe with every purchase. You can see how businesses start in garages."
It's expected that this year's Garage Sale Trail will be the biggest yet. More than 40,000 people are expected to host 16,000 garage sales across the weekend in October.
Registrations for the event are free and are now open for households, schools and community groups.
The first 1250 sellers who register before September 10 will receive a free seller pack with posters, price tags and more.
