A few years ago a couple of our lady bowlers started giving lessons in how to play "Canasta." This was well received and enjoyed by many that had never played the game of "Canasta" and even several that had never mastered card games prior to this. From there they moved on to enjoy the Macquarie ladies monthly afternoon of cards. It has again been noted that we have several non "Canasta players" keen to learn the game so lessons will begin again with Margaret McManus and Patti Sharman two very willing teachers . Please ring the Club on 6882 1019 and leave your name and contact so arrangements can be made for a future date and time. Please note this is not restricted to our bowlers but is available to any ladies wishing to enjoy a game of "Canasta".

Club Dubbo's ability to stage big events is again on display this coming weekend, with the running of the NSW Junior 7-a-Side Championships. Over 120 of the state's best junior bowlers will descend on Dubbo to compete over the two days, along with approximately 200 parents and officials from the 16 bowling zones across the state.
To assist in the running of the championships will be Bowls NSW representatives, Gary Willis and Andrew Lynn. These important men will assist our own highly skilled bowls' manager, Anthony Brown, who has in place a host of local members who have volunteered their services to ensure the championships go off without a hitch. This is the third consecutive year that Club Dubbo has hosted this prestigious event. In addition, tomorrow (Friday) afternoon, Bowls NSW is holding a special training session for all juniors from 1.00pm through to 5 o'clock.
In the championships proper, Club Dubbo is represented by James Robinson, Dorian Abel, Justin Walsh, Zac Miller, Cooper Dart and Adam Ball.
The importance of the event is also highlighted by the fact that local state MP, Dugald Saunders, has the honour of opening these prestigious championships.
In chilly weather, the Minor Pairs Championship got under way last Saturday. In the two games played, Warren Brown and Graham Ross defeated Rick See and Col Hume 21 - 17, whilst Tony Speirs and Brian Jones downed Mick Smith and Alby Harper, 21 - 19, in the other match.
Last Wednesday morning, the social winners were Bob Bates, Ray Strawhan and Frank Rowe. They proved too good for Leo Balstad and Alby Harper.
The bad weather on Friday and Saturday prevented any play on the greens.
Players are reminded that there will be no social or championship bowls this weekend due to the State Junior Championships.
Nominations for the Minor Singles Championship close on August 23, with the first round scheduled Sunday 1st September.
Nominations are also being called for the Mixed Fours Championship. The first round for this event is set for Saturday, 21st September.

Macquarie Men's Bowls
A gorgeously bright sunny morning it was last Thursday, warming the combatants to the task ahead. Team Vic Brook (snr) and Al Russell took on team tricky Dickie Davis and Ray Cross.
This was some contest overall, but team Russell jumped to a handy lead by end eight, seven shots in the lead.
Team Cross replied with seven shots on the next three ends pulling them close, and a further shot had both teams at 12 all on end 13. Three ends to go, the pressure on, nervous time.
Three shots on the next two ends had team Russell get to 15, team Cross needed a three or more on that last end.
It was not to be, only a two was scored, humph! So, they went down by that one elusive shot, even though they both scored 8 ends each.
Not to be outdone this time, Tom Kealy rallied his team (Don Gibson and Mick Pilon) to put in when they faced off against Terry Long, John Wheeler and John Cole. The latter began with confidence, but Kealy's lot were not to be headed and kept in touch, ten all on end 11.
A small hiccup had them slow, letting the John Cole team stay close.
Again, with a three-shot deficit, the last end was crucial to get a win. three shots needed to draw, four shots to win, but not to be as the two scored was not enough to topple the Kealy bunch. They took the win by the one shot, with both teams scoring on eight ends each.
Mal Beasley, Tony Bourke and skipped by Roger Simpson were told to play Ron Fish, Eric Fitzgerald skipped by Al Davies.
Al Davies must have been doing the wondering thing as his lot had a scoring drought for over half a game, Roger Simpson spurring his team on to a lead of nine shots on end ten.
It took another four ends before the Simpson lot scored again, but they seemed in a safe position because the Davies bunch could not score enough to pressure their opponents, having to take a six-shot loss with only seven scoring ends. Mal Beasley was smiling.
On rink seven, play between the two Pete's (Pete Ruzans and Pete Watters) and Ian Moses led by Ted Alder. The Alder/Moses team battled demoralisation with difficulty, putting on brave faces as they tried hard to catch up.
That just did not happen, they could not string together many consecutive ends, which allowed the Pete's to forge on, eventually scoring 20 shots over nine ends, a lead of 11 shots.
A newcomer, B. Young teamed with Greg Hough, Al Nutton teamed with Eric Chamberlain.
This game proved that scoring multiples helps no matter how many ends are involved. Eric's team scored on the remaining seven ends, collecting 15 shots.
They had a few multiple scores that helped, and as mentioned, the number of scoring ends determines the result, unfortunately for them.
Glen Parker, Terry Althofer and Al Andriske had an unusually slow start to their game against Col Beazley, Chooka and Ernie Tink. This was a game where consistent scoring proved to be the better way.
The Andriske team pulled off a huge seven shots on end five but still two shots behind.
Scoring on just five ends was certainly not enough unless pulling off huge seven shots more often, to trouble the Tink team.
They put together 11 scoring ends scoring 23 shots to boot, a lead of ten shots and 6 ends.
Jack Pedron faced Geoff Kent; Sonny Hall faced off against Greg Hudson while Roger Hazlett battled with Roger Hazlett (well he was a swinger).
Somehow, I think Roger Hazlett won that battle. Jack Pedron had his team on fire, Geoff Kent not getting enough out of his team with only four scoring ends totalling only seven shots, giving the Pedron side the opportunities throughout the entire operation, 12 scoring ends and 20 shots well within the range of consistency.
This became the money game, with a margin of one end ahead of the Col Beazley, Chooka and Ernie Tink team.
Two wonderful resters were managed by two wonderful bowlers, Glen Parker and Tom Kealy.
Due to commitments by Pete Kelly, the first semi-final of the over 65's Challenge was played last Thursday afternoon. Shucks it was the two Pete's combatting, Pete Kelly against Pete Forrester.
An interesting game this one, both have had a good lead up in the early rounds. Kelly got three lots of four and a three to surge ahead of the 16-end game.
The aim of the game is to get to 21 first, Kelly managed that with reasonable ease, leaving Pumpkin back on 12. Both did enjoy the sunny arvo, taking to the refreshments after the end of game handshakes.
Friday, the two Cole brothers rocked up to play their semi-final in the over 65's Challenge.
I am sure they do love each other (as brothers), but it was game on at 1pm. No loving going on throughout the game, no holds barred as is said. Maurie Cole verses John Cole.
Maurie had a pretty easy trip through the rounds, John had it not so easy, managing to earn enough wins to get to this game. Hell, both did not let the other get ahead, the measuring tape came out often to make sure who had the shot.
Each shot was value, each shot gained might put pressure on the other. eight all on end eight, ten all on end 11. John dug deep from here, taking a lead of two shots by end 21, 19 to 17.
He probably thought he could do it from here, but brother Maurie squeezed a three the following end to jump ahead by one. 20 to 19, Maurie digging deeper needing just the one shot to end the challenge, John needed two.
Anyone's game from here, but then it happened, a huge count of four from some well-placed bowls by Maurie ended proceedings abruptly, John - well he was beaten by his loving brother. Guess that is the way it goes.
Tomorrow at the 'MAC', the inaugural over 65's Challenge Finale. Tall but loving Maurie Cole will take on the pesky persistent Pete Kelly.
At the best little club, Saturday was awash with bowls. Some played socially, some just rolled up, others just sat back and became watchers.
One serious game took over the TV rink, this was the semi-final match between Steve Wilkinson, Mick Williams with skip Digger Gray and Aaron Hutchins, Jono Davis skipped by Adam Cochrane.
Billed as a contest of the best, it was the hi-light of the Championship. It took all the 25 ends to get a decision, it took just the one final roll of the bowl to determine the outcome.
The watchers were cheering, they were gasping, they were enchanted at the great performance shown by all six of the players.
Let's analyse. The first four ends belonged to Digger's team, scoring a four on the second end. Seven zip up and comfortable leaders feeling confident, they calmly kept the Cochrane team at bay. With eight shots scored over six ends, Cochrane had his team back on track, eight all at end 11.
Anyone's game here. A one by Digger gave his side a slender lead, but the Cochrane lot put together a nice four at end 13, followed by a two the next end, wrenching the lead back. After scoring a one and a three at end 17, Adam's team sat well in control with a lead of eight shots.
Digger urged his lot to step up to the plate and dig deeper, scoring on six of the next seven ends, a total of nine shots, putting the game level with just the one end to play. 19 all, the game hanging in a balance, who had those nerves of steel, who was gonna break, who was gonna be rattled by the pressure now placed on all six bowlers.
The watchers were on their feet, no-one blinked as the final six bowls rolled down the green. A deep breath was required, concentration to the max, yet stay relaxed and bowl as done throughout the game. WoW!
The leads did their thing, the seconds did their thing, it came down to the skips. four bowls to roll, Digger had the mat first, and put in a good one, Adam rolled, pretty good.
Digger and his last bowl for the match managed to get one close to the jack, Adam was then on the stage, pondering at what might be the best bowl - attack or draw.
Digger's bowl was in a position that allowed for the attack, but an attack bowl is risky. What can Adam do? Time came for him to release his bowl; down the green it went. Missed! Oh Wo, oh wo! Game set and match.
Team Digger breathed a sigh of relief, Adam and his lot - well it just was not to be, distraught to say the least.
It was a grand semi-final, played by six bowlers in a spirit befitting their ability, all six bowlers stand proud on what you gave the watchers to witness.
Sunday, August 18 was a combined Presidents Day was the event, outgoing Presidents Mick Pilon and Adam Cochrane savoured their moments. Play was a game of triples, 15 ends and doing it twice.
The organised did one heck of a job this week. From Mick Pilon and Al Nutton checking bowlers in, to the staff behind the bar, to the staff in the restaurant, and most of all the bowlers, I personally commend all.
Bowlers that came from Narromine, Wellington, Trangie, West Dubbo and Dubbo City.
