A serial domestic violence offender who kicked a woman in the head multiple times and threatened to stab her with scissors will be released from jail earlier than expected after a judge varied a sentence handed down by a magistrate in Dubbo.

Dylan James Fieldsend, 32, was convicted of assaulting a woman and breaching an apprehended violence order in May.
At the time magistrate Roger Prowse described Fieldsend's actions as "vicious, unprovoked, inexcusable, thuggish, cowardly and gutless".
He sentenced Fieldsend to 28 months in jail with a non-parole period of 20 months.
At the time Fieldsend called out "lying dog" as he was escorted from the court room.
Fieldsend said he was innocent and tried to get the conviction quashed in the District Court last week.
Judge John North dismissed the conviction appeal but cut Fieldsend's non-parole period.
Originally Fieldsend would have been eligible for parole in October 2020 but now he could be eligible in April 2020.
