Thomas Merritt, 21, allegedly approached a 34-year-old man in a driveway at about 12.30am Saturday.
An altercation ensued and a 28-year-old man who allegedly accompanied Mr Merritt to the Brocklehurst address removed keys from the 34-year-old man's ignition.
Mr Merritt and his accomplice are then alleged to have gone into the house, along with one of the 34-year-old man's passengers.
A short time later Mr Merritt and his accomplice - who police say is known to them and being pursued - returned allegedly wielding a samurai sword.
The pair are accused of demanding money from the 34-year-old and his remaining passenger.
When the 34-year-old man attempted to return to the driver's seat of his car he was allegedly threatened with a tomahawk axe.
Police said Mr Merritt's alleged accomplice and another person left the Brocklehurst address in a stolen Ford Falcon and another vehicle that arrived on the scene during the altercation.
Mr Merritt is also alleged to have left the property with a stolen phone and packet of cigarettes that did not belong to him.
Orana Mid-Western Police District officers were notified of the incident and located the stolen Ford Falcon on Birch Avenue in Dubbo shortly after.
About 6.45pm on Sunday police engaged in a pursuit with a Holden Commodore sedan in East Dubbo, along Murrayfield Drive.
Police allege Mr Merritt ran from that vehicle and was caught after he led police on a short foot pursuit.
Mr Merrit was charged with using an offensive weapon to commit an armed robbery and aggravated assault with intent to rob.
In Dubbo Local Court on Monday he did not enter pleas or apply for bail.
Court documents revealed when police made the case for bail to be formally refused, they said Mr Merritt's criminal history involved violence, weapons and drugs.
The alleged victim is also fearful of retribution towards either themselves or family members.
The case returns to court on September 18 and a police spokeswoman said investigations are ongoing.
