The Industry, Skills and Opportunities Paper, which has been delivered by the Western Research Institute, aims to boost industry growth within regional areas.

Dubbo Regional mayor Ben Shields said the paper was the first step in determining opportunities for businesses to expand.

"The paper identifies potential skill and employment gaps and highlights peak project periods for heavy industry such as rail, construction and manufacturing," he said.

The Industry, Skills and Opportunities Paper was launched on Thursday. It has been supported by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

Included in the paper are projections for skill gaps and training opportunities. It also identifies some positive ways forward for regions and regional NSW to best take advantage of the boom in industry with a focus on population growth, workforce training and business development.

"Some key skills identified for development in the region include plant operators, truck drivers, electricians, diesel mechanics, metal fabricators and engineers," the mayor said.

"The report provides a number of recommendations which have been informed by comprehensive, on-the-ground assessment of capital projects and business capacity across the LGAs of Dubbo, Narromine and Gilgandra, as well as a series of recommendations for the councils to deliver."

Council has committed to the outcomes of the paper, including the development of workforce and business through facilitated training and development. The focus of attracting skilled workers will be done through partnerships and increased marketing in identified areas with council continuing to work closely with stakeholders to secure the best skills outcomes for the region.
