The new Great Big Adventure Pass is one innovation that should work.
Instead of having to buy four separate tickets, the Pass is all tourists will need to get into Taronga Western Plains Zoo, the Wellington Caves, Old Dubbo Gaol and soon-to-be-opened Royal Flying Doctor Service visitor experience.
Taronga Western Plains Zoo director Steve Hink said, "the pass will represent a significant saving versus buying each of the four tickets individually at the attractions".
"Tourism is a major contributor to the regional economy, and there is so much potential for this contribution to grow," he said. " We currently have an unprecedented investment in the region's tourism assets, including the major development of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience, $50 million zoo development and a significant investment in the Old Dubbo Gaol and Wellington Caves. There is no better time for the region's four major attractions to collaborate to draw more visitors to our region, for the benefit of the visitor economy."
One of the best ways to promote tourism is to make it easy for travellers to visit and stay.
Some tourists have time to explore a region leisurely, but many only have short breaks from work, so making it easy for them to come to Dubbo, and to give them bang for buck when they are here is the smartest way to grow the tourism economy.
Every one of the attractions on the Great Big Adventure Pass has something special about it, and the best way to expand upon this idea would be to find or create attractions that are unique to Dubbo.
This campaign highlights the human side of tourism, each is not just a tourist attraction, but an experience and that is how the pass should be marketed.
"Tourism is not just about visitors coming to a place like Dubbo, sleeping in a hotel and visiting the zoo," Mr Hink said.
"Tourism's about people getting out, going to restaurants, cafes, retail outlets, putting petrol in their cars at local petrol stations and all of these things which inject over $300 million worth of income into our local economy each year."
No more valid words have ever been spoken in regards to tourism, and if Dubbo can market itself as a destination for experiences rather than just "that city with the zoo", then we might get a bigger slice of the tourism dollar. We think the Great Big Adventure Pass is a good start.
