The Department of Education has told the Macquarie Conservatorium its lease with the Department of Education will not be renewed when it runs out on December 31, 2022. It has been at the Bultje Street premises since 2003, but now the conservatorium needs a new home.
A Department of Education spokesperson said, "the building's primary purpose was for school use".
"As part of its planning for meeting future needs, the Department of Education has given the conservatorium three-and-a-half years notice that in 2023 the building may be needed to meet the demand of growing primary school enrolment numbers in central Dubbo," the spokesperson said.
The department has done the right thing by the conservatorium by giving it time to find new premises, but let's hope they aren't shuffled off to any old building in town or worse still not be able to find a suitable building.
Music is an enjoyable subject. For some students, music classes are what motivates them to get up every day, and music builds imagination and other intellectual interests.
For most children, imagination is a crucial part of life and music enables a sense of imagination, it encourages creativity, and for some, music lessons lead to the development of composition skills.
Many adults can testify to how music, a song or an album, takes one to a place that allows them to forget the troubles of the day; children would be no different.
Children who learn music usually develop a good attitude towards learning and the task of learning and mastering a song or a piece of music can improve the self-confidence of even the most timid child.
School is stressful, and it's not always fun, but music classes provide a break, and they help foster teamwork, especially if a child is in a choir or a band
A world without music would not be a good place to live in, let's hope the Macquarie Conservatorium can find a new home so it can continue all the good things that music education brings to the community.
