But, with the cold weather, organisers and diners at the annual Black Tie and Gumboot Truffle Dinner at Borrodell Vineyard were delighted when he had found enough to feed them.
There had been talk of trying to break the record for the most truffles found but vineyard owner Borry Gartrell said the freezing conditions put paid to that.
"We dug out half a dozen, but we didn't keep searching," he said.

"They aren't exactly like peaches, they don't need to be picked by a certain time, they are down there maturing all the time."
He said about 80-90 people, mainly from Sydney, donned their gumboots for the hunt before heading inside for the dinner and dance.
They raised about $2000 from a charity auction for the Rural Fire Service.
Mr Gartrell said truffler Teneka Priestly from Bathurst, and Bailey, a staffordshire terrier/labrador cross rescue dog, formed a strong team.
"That's her dog. He just wants to find truffles."
Mr Gartrell said the vineyard would have a truffle hunt every Saturday until the truffles run out from 11am-noon followed by lunch.
