The heart-safe city campaign was started by Australian Red Cross first aid trainer George Chapman in February 2018. His plan was to have an AED installed no less than two minutes apart in all of Dubbo's high traffic areas.

When the final AED is installed at the Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday, it will bring the total number of defibrillators in the city to 100.

Mr Chapman said it was great for the residents to see Dubbo become heart safe and the Australian Red Cross would next start on the surrounding villages and Wellington.

"The AEDs for all the six villages of Stuart Town, Mumbil, Geurie, Wongarbon, Ballimore and Eumungerie are currently on order and will be handed over within weeks," he said.

When the campaign started about 17 months ago there were only ten AEDs in Dubbo.

That has grown tenfold thanks to Dubbo Regional Council placing them in all their buildings and sporting fields, as well as organisations like rotary, Lions clubs, local committees, businesses and the general public giving their support to the campaign.

The AEDs are expected to save lives in Dubbo.

Every minute someone having a cardiac arrest doesn't receive treatment their chance of survival drops by seven per cent. Mr Chapman said every year Dubbo Hospital annually treats 322 people with heart conditions.
