The Roos were brilliant at times but those periods were heavily outweighed by flat patches, allowing the defending premiers to run riot.
On Saturday they put things right.
Taking on a battling Orange City at a cold and blustery No. 1 Oval the Roos' dominant forward pack set the platform early and allowed the hosts to dominate proceedings.
Playing some of their best rugby of the season, the Roos and their fantastic rolling maul had a bonus point wrapped up by half-time and went on with the job in the second stanza in an emphatic 57-17 victory.
"At times last week we played some structured footy and made inroads but didn't do it enough so this week the aim was to play structured footy, and it worked," Roos captain Shaun McHugh post-game.
"We know Orange City play a scrappy kind of game, that's no secret to anyone, so it was good to play with structure, build some phases and get that ascendancy early."

Hamish Gordon and Luke Ryan thrived on that platform set by the forwards, directing traffic and ensuring the Roos stayed camped inside City's 22m for much of the first half.
City had scored the game's first points after the hard-working Duncan Young booted a penalty but weight of possession for the Roos soon led to the first try for Nick Harvey, and some slick hands resulted in Will Archer crossing soon after.
The forward pack soon took centre stage with two brilliant rolling mauls resulting in tries for Chris O'Shea, while the strength in defence in the middle of the park never allowed City any meaningful time on the ball and forced mistakes from scrumhalf Tom Nell.
"The forwards really stood up and we needed to," NSW Country representative McHugh said.
"We had a few late changes with blokes being sick and things like that but luckily we've got a bit of depth at the moment so we can swap blokes in and they can step up."
The damage had been done by half-time as the Roos led 28-3, leading City coach Viv Paasi to give his side a rare spray during the break.
The young Lions side, winless and at the bottom of the ladder, made errors and poor decisions at key times and fell well short of the standards they've set themselves in this year of development.
"That's one of the first times I've had to have that chat at half-time," Paasi said of the stern words.
"But no-one was really exhausted either and that's when you can tell they've got more to give.
"They were able to go out and do that for periods of the second half but it's so important we align to the standards we want to stick to."
It was pretty lethal.
- Shaun McHugh on the Dubbo Kangaroos' attack
The Roos' right edge tore City apart early in the second half, and after being kept relatively quiet early winger Tim Beach burst into the game and scored a quickfire double.
The hosts rang the changes in the final 20 minutes - giving the likes of Beach and McHugh a rest - but City fought on and nabbed the game's final try through Sam Velasco Hoare.
Roos' hulking prop Josh Howarth joined O'Shea and Beach by scoring a double in the win while Gordon's boot was strong in the gusty conditions as he landed six conversions.
"It was pretty lethal," McHugh said of his side's attack, adding it was some of his side's best play of the year.
"The first sixty minutes absolutely was.
"Then there was some changes and our structure went a bit but we used the whole bench and a few of us got a rest, which was good."
The bonus point win, combined with Cowra's loss to Emus, boosts the Roos chances of finishing third with just two rounds remaining.
