A lease is currently in place with the NSW Department of Education. It will not be renewed when it runs out on December 31, 2022 so the building can be used by the department.

Macquarie Conservatourium Board chair Leanne O'Sullivan said it was "disappointing" and "challenging" news for the Conservatourium, but they understood the Department of Education's priorities to grow the student population in Dubbo.

"The Board of Macquarie Conservatorium will now begin the process of assessing options for a venue that will suit the Conservatorium and the needs of all our students and activities. This will involve meeting with various stakeholders, government representatives and the Dubbo Regional Council to start a series of conversations around finding and resourcing a new home for our Conservatorium family," Ms O'Sullivan said.

"We will continue to communicate with everyone on a regular basis so that the Dubbo community is fully aware of what is occurring in relation to this."

The Macquarie Conservatorium of Music has been at the Bultje Street premises since 2003.

It's one of 17 regional conservatouriums in NSW that is supported by the NSW government through the Regional Conservatourium Grants Program.

Ms O'Sullivan said they were very grateful for the long use of the Department of Education facility. It had been an excellent venue for music education and performances, thanks to the spacious teaching studios and useful concert hall.

Conservatourium director Vivienne Winther said they delivered music programs to 18 schools in Dubbo, Wellington, Narromine, Gilgandra and Warren on a weekly basis.

They also run music education programs in preschool and child care centres, provided tuition for youth and adults of all skill levels, and ran a whole range of ensemble, music theatre and choral programs for people in the community to get together and make music.

The Conservatourium also brings visiting musicians to Dubbo for concerts, workshops and masterclasses, Ms Winther said.

"Teaching and performances will continue at our Bultje Street premises right up until the end of our lease in December 2022, unless we find a new and appropriate venue before then," she said.
