In 1024 at the United Nations General Assembly it was declared that July 15 July would be celebrated as World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) as part of a global recognition and promotion of skills for younger generations. The theme for this years event is "Learning to learn for life and work" with the focus and lifelong learning and raising awareness about the importance of youth skills development.

Young people are almost three times more likely to be unemployed than adults and continuously face the challenges of greater labour market inequalities. The aim of WYSD is to advocate for skills as an important factor to improve young people's transitions to decent work, and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing today's most challenging global issues.
While many local councils and employment agencies and tertiary education suppliers will be hosting a number of events across the Central and Far West, there is also the chance to get involved in WYSD on a global scale thanks to the wonders of modern technology.
You can join the celebrations by using the hashtag #wysd2019 so people around the world can see all your activities and events and there will also be live streaming of events by the United Nations. A panel discussion will be held at UN Headquarters on July 15 that will bring together the voices of youth, UN member states, the UN system, private sectors, civil society, academia and other organisations.

There will also be a photography competition that will allow amateur and professional photographers from across the globe to utilise their skills to capture pictures that not only show but tell some amazing stories. The "SkillsInAction" Photo Competition is open to anyone over the age of 18 and photo entries should highlight the opportunities that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) provides for young people.
Comeptition organisers said they are looking for interesting moments when skills are in action, showing how TVET and skills development can contribute to one of the following:
- Encouraging youth employment and entrepreneurship
- Promoting TVET for all regardless of gender, ethnicity, or disability.
- TVET for green societies and sustainable work practices
- Promoting Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and digital skills
A week long exhibit entitled "Inspiring youth and improving perception for skills" that has been organised by WorldSkills and UNESCO, with display a wide range of material including selected photos from the "SkillsinAction" Photo Competition.
