Officers attached to the Orana Mid Western Highway unit were patrolling streets in Wellington at 10.15am on Sunday when one motorist caught their attention.

"Orana Highway Patrol were patrolling the Curtis Street (Mitchell Highway) near the Charles Street intersection, Wellington. This is a 60km/h signposted speed limit area," officers said in a statement.

"Police observed a utility travelling well above the posted speed limit as it was travelling into the township."

Officers said a speed check was conducted and the vehicle was detected travelling up to 96km/h at the end of the check.

A short time later the male driver from Wellington was stopped.

"The driver said 'it's an 80(km/h) zone'," officers said.

At the time of the office police will allege the motorist was not carrying his drivers licence.

The male driver's details were checked and he was issued with two infringements, including: exceed speed over 30km/h ($903) carrying five demerit points, and drive motor vehicle not carry licence ($112).

"When informed that his driver's licence will suspended for three months by RMS [Roads and Maritime Services] at a later date, he attempted to down play the offence in that he 'was not doing this sort of thing at night like others'," officers said.

Police have reminded motorists that, irrespective of the time, drivers should drive to the conditions and the posted speed limit.
