Dubbo Sportsworld manager Greg King says the annual competition was designed to give regional players a chance to play against others.
"It's a series designed to give kids experience against kids their own age before they move up into the national competition, the Nationals is coming up in the first week of July," King said.
"The base format is an opportunity for our junior players to compete against other junior squads in the same age group."
"They don't get as many opportunities to play against other teams of the same age because they're out here in the regional areas."
The two-day competition will also feature a much anticipated rematch between the Western Stars and the MacArthur Raptors.
"It's a bit of a feature match," King said.
The match-up will pit the big guns of the western country side against the dominant metro team once again, with some significant bragging rights on the line for both teams.
"They've only met twice before where the Stars won the first game, but the Raptors went on to win the final in the state titles, so the Raptors are the dominant force in Sydney, have been for the last two or three years and their only loss comes to the Western Stars."
With the action taking place in Dubbo, the Stars will have the advantage of familiar territory to play on this weekend.
"This time they Raptors will be travelling and they'll be playing on the Dubbo courts, so Dubbo will be afforded a bit of a home game advantage this time around."
King estimates that around 'half a dozen' Dubbo players will go on to compete at the nationals competition, pulling talent from the 21's, fifteens and opens teams that compete this weekend.
Among the familiar faces lining up for the competition this weekend will be Dubbo region cricketing talents like Benny Patterson, the Skinner brothers, Tom Atlee and Tommy Nelson.
"The Western region are even going to take the time to field a few young fellows for a fifteens team, so that'll be a really good experience for them."
"It's a great opportunity."
