Yanco is a co-educational, fully residential high school, specialising in agriculture, with the school providing a quality secondary education in a historic rural setting. Located in the Riverina, the school has a proud tradition of promoting positive values and developing confident, capable and community-minded students, along with giving priority to isolated students.
Students are encouraged to develop responsible leadership, personal integrity and sportsmanship, and to strive for excellence in academic, cultural, sporting and civic endeavors. The school focuses on holistic development through the curriculum, extracurricular activities and residential experiences, ensuring that students become well equipped to take their place in life.
Gone are the days of cold communal showers, lumpy mattresses and inedible food, along with the 'stiff upper lip' reputation. Modern-day boarding schools are warm, vibrant and inclusive communities, underpinned by comprehensive and effective pastoral care.
One of the benefits of the Wenona Boarding House is its size. With space for only 50 boarders, each girl is surrounded by a community who knows them, cares about them and encourages them. The primary function of the Wenona Boarding House is to provide a 'home from home' for boarders during term time and girls are encouraged to bring in their own bedding and decorate their rooms with photographs and posters, and have a space where they can express themselves.
Boarders are encouraged to participate in everything that the Wenona has to offer. As the Boarding House is based on campus, it's much easier for boarders to attend any sports, artistic and music practice scheduled outside the normal school days, along with a variety of weekend activities.
Now in his sixth year at Barker, Ben Christopherson's tall frame topped with an Akubra, has become a familiar site at Barker's boarding houses. As its new Head of Boarding, he is looking forward to continuing to develop a family type of environment within boarding, based on respect and the rules that underpin any house structure.
"I really enjoy the interaction with the students," he said. "This year I'm hoping to connect the boys and girls in boarding a little more as I want them to come together and make decisions as one". Working alongside Ben are the Boarding Captains, Rosie McNair and Cooper Evans.
All agree that the Barker boarding community is unique and diverse, with Rosie saying she believes boarding has taught her to be a good leader and role model. "There's a lot of questions when you first start boarding and the Big Sister/Brother program we have in the boarding house is great, because you have someone you can just go to and ask".
Canberra Grammar School (CGS) is a co-educational Independent Anglican School offering outstanding academic education, co-curricular opportunities and pastoral care to day and boarding students of all backgrounds and faiths within a community guided by Christian values.
CGS has always been a proud boarding school, acknowledging the responsibility and commitment it takes to nurture students who are entrusted to the School's care. In 2019, CGS opened its brand new purpose-built boarding accommodation, representing the next phase of its transition to full co-education with nearly 30 girls in Years 7 to 12 joining CGS Boarding, and in 2020 will open its next stage of boarding with room for a further 20 girls.
A parent's life is marked by firsts - your first child, their first tooth, and their first day at kindergarten. The biggest 'first' some parents have experienced to date may well have been 'first day at boarding school'. Living in the Boarding House encourages responsibility and independence, yet staying in touch with family is important to the School.
Boarders at CGS have 24-hour, seven-day-a-week support from dedicated and caring professionals including live-in and visiting tutors, a registered nurse and visiting doctor. The School encourages prospective families to visit during an Open Day or by arranging an appointment to view the School. Alternatively, prospective families can tour Canberra Grammar School and boarding facilities in virtual reality at their Your Tour website.
