Touring a major musical to regional centres is an expensive business. Perhaps that is the reason the sets for tonight's performance are so minimalist. The sparse set means the actors and the crack three-piece band have to work hard to transport the audience into the world of the Sapphires.
And work hard they do. The almost sell out crowd travels the highs and lows of the gem of a singing quartet. From humble beginnings at the Tiki club in Melbourne to touring overseas entertaining troops during the Vietnam war, budding romance, rekindled romance and unwanted pregnancy, the cast keeps the audience with them until the final bows.
The only negative to the evening would be the constant sound troubles that do upset some of the audience.
When the cast are singing we can hear them perfectly, but when they are talking, the dialogue is often lost, either drowned out by the band, who play pretty softly for a rock-soul group and try their best to be sensitive to the situation, or due to some actors not understanding the importance of projecting their voice when talking.
That aside, tonight's performance is well-received, and the sustained applause at the end proves the near-capacity crowd at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre enjoyed themselves and appreciated the show.
