Everyone at the Dubbo saleyards was encouraged to buy and wear a $20 pink tutu to raise money for the Cancer Council.
By 9.30am, Stars of Dubbo participant Jackie Lindsay said she expected she had already raised about $1000.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Ms Lindsay said as more people grew courageous, the number of people wearing tutus quickly grew. Donations were also generously handed over.
"These are all people whose businesses have been affected from the drought and they've been exceptional," she said.
The star said she didn't think Dubbo residents understood how vital the saleyards were to the community. Most people picked up their meat from the supermarket without thinking about it, she said.
In both the fundraiser at the saleyards and her upcoming community garage sale, Ms Lindsay said people had been incredibly generous, including her students at Skillset Senior College.
"Sometimes it's the people who have the least who give the most," Ms Lindsay said.
All of the money raised will go towards Ms Lindsay's total for the Stars of Dubbo Dance for Cancer. Participants in the event are encouraged to raise at least $2500.
Donations can also be made online through www.everydayhero.com.au/event/starsofdubbo2019.
Almost $23,000 has already been raised.
