Or it could be the work of Narromine hoop and three-time NSW Approved Rider of the Year Ricky Blewitt.
Either way, the six-year-old gelding with just five wins and seven placings to his name has finished second at his last three outings - all with Blewitt in the saddle.
And he'll be looking to salute for the first time in almost two years in Saturday's $5000 Alkane Resources Ltd Tomingley Picnic Cup (1500 metres).
Salerno only had five starts since moving to Rolfe's Canberra stables in January, and had his first picnic outing on March 19.
Since then the Snitzel-Keela progeny has literally been getting closer on each occasion, finishing 4.9, 3.68 and 2.34 lengths off the pace in each second-place finish.

Salerno will carry the 68-kilogram top-weight in the feature race, and will face stiff competition from the other four starters including Rodney Robb's sentimental favourite Rusty Motorbike.
The nine-year-old gelding will hope to back up last weekend's performance when he took out the $7000 Back O'Bourke Harry Hart Memorial Picnic Cup (1600m).
He'll also look to bolster his chances in the 2019 NSW Picnic Championship Series, after leaping to equal eighth on the table with last Sunday's win.
Dame Largo, Mister Burgess and Burrangong round out the field.
Racing starts at the Tomingley Picnic Race Club at 1.30pm, with the main event at 4pm.
