On April 8 at around 7.45am, the girl said a man driving a white ute approached her and asked where the hospital was.
He then asked the girl her name, got out of the car and was standing four metres away from her when the school bus began to approach its stop.
As this happened, the man got back in the ute and drove away.
"This is very rare," acting Orana Mid-Western Police District Crime Commander Sergeant Amanda Trindall told the Daily Liberal.
"There was no sinister demeanour reported.
"It could have been a child approach or someone genuinely asking for directions but we are erring on the side of caution"
Sergeant Trindall urged parents to discuss stranger danger with their children and instruct young people to never get in a vehicle with someone they do not know.
"Report anything suspicious to police and if you see any unusual cars, write down their rego details and give them to police."
The man who approached the girl is described as being aged in his mid to late 40s,180 centimeters tall with a muscular build and fuzzy, short black hair.
Anyone with information that could assist with this investigation is encouraged to call Dubbo police on 6883 1599 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
