Three people were walking on Whylandra Street at around 11.30pm.
When a man broke away from the other group members — between the Ezi-Clean Car Wash and Lucky 7 convenience store — two men approached him.
Dubbo police said the assailants knocked the man to the ground and punched him while he was down.
His screams were heard by the two people he was originally in the company of.
They moved to assist the man and police said the attackers were last seen running towards the Emile Serisier Bridge.
The attackers were wearing dark clothes and were described as being skinny, around six foot tall and of Aboriginal appearance.
Dubbo police have urged anyone with information to contact them on 6883 1599.
The latest report from the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research revealed non-domestic violence related assault in the Dubbo local government area is double the NSW average.
