The money will help establish a 15-bed rehabilitation facility and an eight-bed detox facility, if another $2 million is committed by the NSW government. Another $2.5 million will also be needed per year to run the rehabilitation.

Federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton said the facility had been needed for a "long, long time" in Dubbo. He said across the region methamphetamine use had been causing enormous problems in families.

"I had a couple come and see me late last year and they explained to me how their son, who was a popular bright boy at school, had an aptitude for mechanics and started his own business, and was doing quite well started taking ice," Mr Coulton said. 

"In a very short time he ended up taking his own life in very tragic circumstances and I believe he passed away before he turned 25."

Mr Coutlon said the drug was during normal lives into "chaos" and there was only a narrow window to make a difference when someone asked for help.

To fund the construction of the facility another $2 million is needed from the NSW government. Mr Coulton said he had been in discussions with Dugald Saunders, who's on track to be the Dubbo MP, and was sure there would be  "the appropriate response when the time comes".

The land for the rehabilitation facility would be supplied by Dubbo Regional Council.

Mayor Ben Shields said council would be pushing the state government to try and get its commitment.

"The mums and dads, husbands and wives, uncles and aunties, families who are affected by this great curse on our community are going to be relieved that we're finally heading in the right direction," Cr Shields said.
