Cr Shields said the main street was "embarrassing" thanks to an increase in the number of starlings and pigeons roosting.

He's calling for council to look at the options to deter the birds away from the CBD. Council has tried numerous methods in the past to disrupt the birds, including hiring falcons to chase them away. They've also attempted high-pressure spraying, noises to deter the birds and reducing branch density.

"Frankly it's embarrassing, our main street at the moment, how bad it looks, how bad it smells. We can't continue to go down this path of only dong a small amount of cleaning," Cr Shields said.

"We need to make sure we really increase the efforts as much as possible."

The starlings and pigeons are primarily roosting in the northern end of Macquarie Street, in the non-native trees.

The mayor said it was also affecting business in the CBD.

"Going into the very busy Easter break we cannot have our CBD looking absolutely atrocious. Shopkeepers are cranky about it, and rightfully so...it's quite literally scaring away customers," Cr Shields said.

"Shopkeepers tills indicate a strong and healthy economy, I certainly don't want to be seeing any of our customers, their customers, being scared away from the main street because of this feral problem we have."

Cr Shields said he had received a number of complaints about the starlings "and what they leave behind, particularly in the morning".

While the options to deter the birds are being investigated, Cr Shields asked council to increase the amount of cleaning they're undertaking. Council cleans the street and furniture daily, but the mayor said he wanted it to be done more frequently.
