At 9.50pm on Saturday night Saunders was leading with just 50.94 per cent and Dickerson was on 49.06 per cent.
Neither candidate are expecting a result tonight.
"It's very close there is no doubt. I'm optimistic but not calling anything tonight," Saunders said.
"Preferences are hard to get right."
Saunders said the waiting feeling was both "bizarre and surreal."
Dickerson said he knew it would be tight but believes the Nationals will win the seat.
"I'd still back Dugald in at this stage. Pre-polling hasn't been counted and it typically favours the incumbent."
Although the television was on in the background of Dickerson's party, he said he was mostly spending time talking to his volunteers.
"I've been talking to volunteers and thanking the team for the grassroots support," he said.
Saunders is pleased to see the Coalition Government form and Gladys Berejiklian return as premier with John Barilaro as deputy and head of the Nationals.
"It's one of those things, seeing people who are now my friends successful in their electorate," he said.
"I hope I'm able to be a part of it."
Neither Saunders nor Dickerson are are surprised at how tight the vote is in the Dubbo electorate.
"I worked hard and he worked hard but I believe I'm the best person for the job," Saunders said.
