We all remember it well, back in May 2016 when the government was looking at merging councils and Dubbo and Wellington were on the list.
The Dubbo community was against it, the Wellington community was against it. Both councils were against it, and the list of reasons got longer and longer the more the debate between the communities and the government went on.
But it happened. The two councils were forced to merge.
And then, after a while, the arguments died down. It was accepted.
Dubbo and Wellington residents were united under the Dubbo Regional Council banner. The joint council was formed, money was granted, and things have gone ahead for both towns in the past few years.
While the ward system has been questioned, and it possibly needs to be looked at before the next council election, things are moving forward, for both towns and the villages.
And now, depending on Saturday's results (or next week's results because all we keep hearing is that it's going to be a very close election), things could be reversed - if residents want it, that is.
If Labor holds government, councils who were forced to merge would be given the choice to have referendum on a demerger if a petition is signed by the former local government area by 20 per cent of the population.
It would be up to residents of either former council area to get the petition together, and get it signed before a referendum would be held.
But, the feeling we are getting talking to residents these days is it's been accepted. If Labor do win, it will be interesting to see if a petition gets off the ground and has enough signatures to get to the 20 per cent mark.
Maybe if it was two years ago, feelings would be different.
But almost three years on, isn't it time to have a closer look at what we have, keep moving forward, and just get on with it?
