Scott Tucker continued his decimation of Rugby's batting line-up, claiming another three wickets to finish with 7-56 on day two of the final round of the 2018-19 season.
Teenager Jimmy Kuntze also continued his impressive run in first grade, taking his third catch of the match on Saturday to dismiss Rugby wicket keeper Peter Karydis (20) after helping Tucker see off Nick Karydis (0) and Ben Rosenbaum (0) - and scoring his maiden half century - on day one.
Corey McDean also pitched in with three catches on Saturday.
"Tuck bowled really well, he always puts in 110 per cent and he's a real mixed bag," Souths stalwart Mitch Bower said.
"He can give you five of the worst balls you'd ever face in an over, and then one ball that could take anyone's off stump.
"He bowls them wicket balls that win you matches. He put it all together and he bowled well."
Bower added that it was good to see Kuntze "stepping up with the bat in the last two weeks", the young gun scoring 47 against Macquarie the previous round before his 53 last weekend.
"Hopefully he'll take some confidence into next season," Bower said. "I think he will."
Otherwise the win was little cause for celebration, with Bower pulling no punches in his assessment of the Hornets' season.
He was pleased to see that the side "stuck to our guns and got the job done" in the final match of the season, and playing for pride "even though it's a dead rubber".
"There was no pressure on us - it didn't really matter if we won or lost - but we sort of had a chat that it would be good not to go a whole season without winning a match," Bower said.
"While we're still playing, we're going to give 110 per cent ... we're still going to play as if it means something.
"It's too little, too late to have too much of a good feeling."
As a "successful club" that featured in the past three grand finals, Bower said "it's not like a win's very unusual for us".
They came close on several occasions throughout the 2018-19 season - most notably in round five when Rugby caught their 188-run with just five balls to spare.
Bower said it was pleasing to see the bowlers and batters all doing their job well, adding "we put it together for a change".
But he said they wouldn't dwell on their lone win during the off-season.
"We want to try and win every match and we got a win on Saturday and that's great, but it is what it is," he said.
"We're not going to be thinking about it too much, win or lose. It's not going to affect us too much."
