With many voters confused by the Federal and State divide, and often disengaged from politics as a whole, we thought we'd have some fun.
Reporters from the Daily Liberal, Mudgee Guardian and Wellington Times spoke to a number of residents who were keen to take part in a straw poll, asking voters just three questions: could they identify their sitting MP, were they happy with the performance of their MP and could they name any of the candidates for the seat of Dubbo, which includes the Dubbo, Narromine and Mid-Western local government areas.
The good news for current Troy Grant is that more than two-third of those asked recognised him, but from that same group only one-third of those approved of his performance.
Mr Grant will retired from politics at the election with his party colleague Dugald Saunders contesting the seat on behalf of the Nationals on March 23.
Our reporters discovered that most people surveyed knew the names of some of the contesting candidates, contrary to the popular belief that people are uninterested in politics.
Policing, cost of living, regional jobs, and affordable rental aged care were the key issues for most Dubbo residents.
Jake Lynch, a 24-year-old Barista, asked the NSW Government to ensure around-the-clock policing and more crime prevention measures in his area.
People also demanded more funding for Dubbo Hospital, particularly for security of staff when leaving work at night, and tourism.
